Am I an artist? That question pops up everywhere and in many forms. The question that must be answered first, however, is a deceptively simple one. What is art?

Art, by definition, is a creation. It is that which is not drawn from either of the two bases of instinct: reproduction and survival.* Therefore, anything that does not fall into those two categories completely is art.

Food, for example. Eating just to eat falls under survival. Add flair, cook a dish you invented...that may be survival, but it's also art.

So to answer my question...yes. I am an artist.
